Bali trip by Yip Feng
26th January, 23 46. We reached the Despensar Airport in Bali, Indonesia at around six thirty on the today. We made our way through the customs, through the baggage check, and of course through the crowds of people. When we reached the entrance of the airport and located our driver behind a bronze Suzuki Apv. We loaded our luggage with the help of two porters, into the booth of the car. We whizzed through the night from the airport. Supposedly, we were to meet two of mother’s friends at the villa we would be staying at for the next 8 days. Our first stop was the DFS galleria in Sunur, where we would buy our groceries. My mother started picking items off the shelves, from biscuits to a watermelon. After the grocery shopping, we headed off to the villa.
The villa was said to be owned by a French couple, which was a friend of my mum. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the maids at the villa, both wearing smiles. We dashed towards the rooms we were going to stay in. We looked in; it did not change except for some minor renovations since our last visit on the December of 2007. We met my mum’s friends who were already settled in the room they shared with my mum and sister. After that we went to bathe and lay on the comfortable bed, exhausted and tired.
27th January, 22 36. We woke up from our sleep to my mum’s porridge and delicious noodles. After breakfast, we went for a walk around the villa and out to the beach. It was a half hour walk from the villa. We passed by some hotels and restaurant, but mostly stall for surfing lesson. We reached our villa at about 10 30. After bathing, our driver took us around Bali, to kuta and sanur for shopping. I bought a Barack Obama t-shirt at Joe’s surf shop. I even saw a t-shirt saying: Mr. Bean Laden!
After all that, we went to a restaurant called Made Warung restaurant. The food there was delicious; we all had a scrumptious meal. After that, it was another round of shopping. At about 16 30, we left for a hotel named Waka Gangga. We had to travel for two hours to reach our destination. There, we saw a beautiful sunset. Other than that, the journey was quite worthless. After that, we went back to the villa for dinner and then, we went to sleep.

We woke up to a fine day, still had mum cooked breakfast but it was better today. We left for rafting at 9 30 by a Sobek hired minibus to the rafting site. We first stopped at the finishing point of rafting and confirmed our registration. We then headed to the starting point, where we collected our headgear, paddle and PFD. We climbed 250 steps down to the Ayung River where our inflatable raft was waiting for us at. After given instructions, we paddled off! We paddled for almost an hour and forty minutes. The water level was quite low that day and might be even lower on Saturday on our next rafting trip. After the strenuous rafting, we took some food at the bank and climbed up 300 steps back to the ground. We then showered and our driver picked us up from the finishing point of the Sobek rafting. Later, we went to Bebek Bengil (dirty duck) restaurant. We had a delicious meal. The food was great and I had 2 glasses of lime fizzer. Unfortunately, it was also when I found out I lost my camera at Sobek rafting centre when we were showering, imagine all my precious photos gone!
We then went to rows of shops in the Ubud district. I bought my mum a beaded ring for 20,000 rupee (sgd about $3). It calmed her anger down a little, not much for 20,000 rupee. After all, we went back to the villa to rest and for dinner. Of course, it was sleeping time soon.

We left the house at about 0900 as we want to spend the most time out because my mother’s friend is leaving today before us. We first tried to find spas for my mother’s friends as they want to do spa and message. We went to several spas but they all did not suit my mum’s friend. We finally drop her at the hard rock café for spa and message. My mum, my sister and I then proceeded to Jenggala (a ceramic pottery shop in Ulu Watu, Jimbaran), where we had a chance to paint some sculpture and plates. Upon reaching our destination, we settled down to paint. We took quite some time before we chose the plates we wanted to paint. I chose a ketupat plate and my sister chose a cow mug. Even my mother painted, she painted an ‘elegant’ horse. After all, we left to pick my mother’s friend up and went home after that. At about 16 30, we sent my mother’s friends to the airport in Denpasar. We stopped by DFS galleria for my mum’s friend to do last minute shopping. We reached the airport at about 18 15 and waved her good bye. We then went home after that. Soon, it was dinner time and we all settled down for dinner. Later, we slept at 23 46 after watching high school musical 3.

Mostly shopping today, we went to ubud in the morning at about 9 00 and kuta in the day. Bought many stuff from Poppis Street, like DC shoes board shorts. All the shops we’ve been to in the discovery shopping centre were very quiet. We could tell that they were, too hit by the financial crisis quite badly. Most tourist that come here are only Chinese and Europeans. We went to Segara seafood restaurant for dinner that day. It was okay, average. But cost sgd $210. The dinner was scrumptious. After a walk in discovery centre, we left for our villa, our home in Bali.

This morning, we left in a hired car to St Regis Hotel, a 7 stars, luxurious resort in south Bali, Nusa Dua. We explored the whole resort area and had a delicious lunch in its 7 stars restaurant. I had beef spaghetti which tasted even better than dirty duck (Bebek Bengil), of course, at a price of 280000 rp. After which, a hotel guide showed us the villa suites. It was the nicest hotel room I had ever seen! There was 3 plasma TVs, 1 private swimming pool, 24 hour butler service and an amazing view through the windows. But all these come with a price of US $1350! After that, we left for home. We did stop by 2 surf factory outlets and 2 pharmacies to find my grandmother’s ‘bao ji wan’ some Chinese medicine which sooth stomach aches. We then reached home. My mum and I then went to a street along Bali Hyatt, where I bought a fake Puma shoe and a fake Nike one each at only sgd $30! We went home happy with our purchases after that.

This morning, we went to Tengala Waja River for white water rafting. It was a different river so we wanted to try it out. The Sobek van picked us up in our villa and left for Tengala Waja River. Upon reaching our destination, we did the same as we did in Ayung River. We climbed down 150 steps to the river. The difference between the two rivers is that Tengala waja has 2 drops; the first one is 1.5 meter high and the other one is 4 meters high. Tengala waja also is harder than Ayung River. After the raft, we ascended to the top of the hill for lunch. My mother paid the Sobek driver to bring us to each part of ubud for shopping. We then returned home with our purchases. My mother and I had a walk to the street along Bali Hyatt again. We reached home for dinner and a good night’s sleep.
